EUREKA – In a surprise ceremony between the seventh- and eighth-grade basketball games on December 16, Craig Gerdes was called to the floor along with his wife, Karen, to be honored for his 30+ years of coaching Eureka Middle School basketball, baseball and track.

Over 100 people who had been coached by Gerdes or who had served with him, gathered on the floor to wish him well. Ben Zobrist , a Tampa Bay Rays All Star, and Andy Studebaker, Indiana Colts linebacker, added their praise for their favorite coach. At the end of the ceremony, Gerdes said, “The memories that I’ve had in this gymnasium are many, but this will be the biggest memory of all."

The event was the kickoff for the fundraising campaign to raise about $20,000 to resurface the gymnasium, which will be re-named Craig Gerdes Court, and the center circle will bear his name.
