Rockford Rescue Mission has received a grant of nearly $3,400 in support of the Mission’s “Meal Service Upgrade Project” and toward the purchase of a food warmer, pans, shelving for the pantry and cooler, and a table for the Mission dining room.

The grant was made possible by the Margaret K. Aldeen Christian Ministries Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and is expected to help better equip the Mission to provide nutritious meals for hungry and homeless families and individuals, which can often be the first step toward building a stable life.

“Something as simple as a plate of hot food can lift a heavy burden for a man who hasn’t eaten for days or a mother who doesn’t know how she’ll feed her children tomorrow,” said Mission Executive Director Sherry Pitney.  “When impoverished and homeless individuals come to the Mission in crisis, our first priority is to offer the basic human essentials of food, shelter and clothing. Then within our safe and encouraging environment, we help them work through the circumstances that brought them to our doors and begin to regain their independence.”

In 2013 the Mission provided 164,455 meals and 58,767 nights of safe shelter, and 228 men and women received help through our residential life-recovery program.

“It’s truly a miracle to see how a single meal can impact a life, and the Mission is grateful to the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois for their support of this critical project,” Pitney said.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is the area’s largest provider of grants and scholarships.
