The Bloomington Center for Performing Arts has two celebrated acts coming to town this January.
On January 11th, The Center will be hosting Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience, a Buddy Holly tribute show with renowned Buddy Holly interpreter Billy McGuigan.
The show is described as an electrifying, high energy, rock n’ roll extravaganza, featuring McGuigan as Buddy Holly backed by the six piece Rave On Band and a three piece horn section.
The show features many classic Buddy Holly songs, such as “Peggy Sue”, “Raining in My Heart”, “It’s So Easy”, “That’ll Be the Day”, “True Love Ways”, “Oh Boy”, and “Rave On”.
As a Buddy Holly interpreter, Billy McGuigan has played more than 1,500 Rave On! shows as well as over 450 performances in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, a musical based on Buddy Hollys’ rise to fame.
His performances as Buddy Holly have garnered much praise, even from Buddy Hollys’ contemporaries.
Tommy Allsup, a Grammy award winner and lead guitarist for Buddy Holly in the 1950s, praised the show saying “Rave On! is the best Buddy Holly show out there.”
Sonny West, the original songwriter of the famous Buddy Holly songs “Rave On!” and “Oh, Boy”, praised McGuigans’ performance saying “Billy is the best, he really is.”
McGuigans’ love of music started at a young age, inspired greatly by his father, a big Buddy Holly and Beatles fan.
“There was always music in our house.” McGuigan said. “Whether it was background for dinner, up front for parties or required listening because of the release of a Beatles-related album, music was always the forefront of our family.”
Tickets for the show are available through the Bloomington Center for the Performing arts at https://itkt.choicecrm.net/templates/BLOM/ starting at $22 per ticket.
Also coming to the Bloomington Center for Performing Arts this January is up and coming stand up comedian Tig Notaro.
Notaro’s most recent comedy album made it to the No. 3 spot on the Billboard charts, selling over 75,000 copies.
In addition to being a financial success, the album scored highly with critics across the board garnering positive reviews from such publications as Rolling Stone, Time, Huffington Post, Entertainment Weekly, LA Times, and more.
World famous comedian Louis CK described her stand-up as “… an amazing example of what comedy can be. A way to visit your worst fears and laugh at them. Tig took us to a scary place and made us laugh there. Not by distracting us from the terror but by looking right at it and just turning to us and saying "wow. Right?". She proved that everything is funny. And has to be.”
Notaro is performing at the BCPA on January 10th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available now, and selling fast, through the centers’ website starting at $18.
