It’s spring and we want to create beautiful, pastel desserts. A super flavoring and coloring device is the kids’ favorite, Kool-Aid (the unsweetened, dry powder).
Frosting - When you want a lovely pink frosting, add a little strawberry, raspberry or cherry Kool-Aid. Not only will you have a fresh pink, but the frosting will be surprisingly flavorful. The lime flavor yields a pretty green; the blue-raspberry flavor gives you a nice blue. Orange makes a frosting that reminds you of Creamcicles. Grape flavor will give you a lavender that tastes good, but it’s not a very pretty color.
Angelfood Cake – Pour a packet of Kool-Aid into a box of Angelfood cake mix before you add the water. I tried it with cherry, and it was a super-cherry tasting cake in an intense pink.
Fruity Cakes – Add your favorite Kool-Aid packet to any white cake you are making.
Diet Cream Cheese Spread – If you have a diabetic in your midst, you can make them a terrific cream cheese spread by adding a little Kool-Aid powder to a container of Kraft Whipped Cream Cheese. Sweeten with Nutrasweet or Splenda.
Cookies – Make up your favorite sugar cookie recipe (Snickerdoodle dough works well, too) and pour in Kool-Aid for a surprise flavor. You will have to experiment to find out how much Kool-Aid to add to your cookie dough. To make them even more special, roll balls of dough in dry Jell-O or sprinkle dry Jell-O over the cookies before you bake them.
