Helen Robenstein served these at one of our Historical Society functions, and they were moist and delicious.

1 C raisins
1 C water
½ C liquid shortening
1 C sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 ¾ C flour
¼ t salt
1 t baking soda
1 t cinnamon
1 t allspice
½ t cloves
½ C chopped nuts

Combine raisins and water in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, shortening and egg. Sift dry ingredients into the raisin mixture. Stir in nuts and pour into a greased 10” x 15” jelly-roll pan. Bake 15 minutes at 350°.
