The DuPage County Health Department has anounced the appointment of Karen Ayala, MPH as new Executive Director, effective Dec. 16.

Ayala's appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Health at its Dec. 12 meeting.

"Karen is well respected among our community partners and is committed to advancing the Health Department's mission of providing exceptional public health services to DuPage County residents," said Linda Kurzawa, President of the DuPage County Board of Health.

Since joining the Health Department in 2007, Karen has been a dedicated and innovative leader of the Community Health and Public Services Departments, both of which provide invaluable, and life-saving, services to DuPage County families.

Her drive, passion and determination shown throughout her tenure with the Department will be an invaluable asset as the agency continues to navigate the changes currently underway in how health care services are provided to those in need.

"I look forward to working with our community partners and elected officials to ensure the Health Department remains at the forefront of innovation," said Ayala.  "I am also humbled to be leading a dedicated and hard-working group of employees whose main goal each day is to ensure our residents have access to quality health care services."

This transition in leadership was made all the easier due to the hard work and strategic vision of Maureen McHugh (whose last day as Executive Director will be Feb. 5, 2014) and the Board of Health, both of whom recognized that in order to meet the needs of DuPage County residents, the Department needed to reorganize and reprioritize.

Their planning for the future has made the Health Department a leader in health care throughout the region.

"The Board of Health is deeply appreciative of Maureen McHugh's tenure with the Department.  Under her dynamic leadership the agency is immersed in the community, on solid financial ground and able to meet the challenges of the future to make Dupage the healthiest County in the nation," said Kurzawa.
