The Northern Illinois University football team will make its fourth straight appearance in the Marathon MAC Championship game Friday, Dec. 6, when the Huskies take on the Mid-American Conference East Division champions at Ford Field in Detroit.

The Huskies tuned up for that game last Tuesday quarterback Jordan Lynch broke his NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback set just five weeks ago?

NIU’s Heisman Trophy hopeful broke that record Tuesday night as the Huskies beat Western Michigan 33-14 to finish their regular season undefeated. Lynch rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another.

With the win, No. 14 NIU improves to 12-0 on the season and extends its Huskie Stadium winning streak to 26 games.

The victory also extends NIU’s conference winning streak to 25 as the Huskies close Mid-American Conference play with an 8-0 record this fall. Western Michigan closes the season 1-11, 1-7 in the MAC.

“Obviously the elements played a huge factor in the game,” said NIU head coach Rod Carey. “It was tough for both teams to throw and kick. I am really happy with the win, obviously. You run the ball like we did in those conditions, and score the points that you have to, and then hats off to our defense. We had some guys out with injury, and we held them to just 14 points, so overall I’m really pleased.”

Lynch’s 321 yards bettered his previous career high of 316 set on Oct. 19 at Central Michigan. He also became the fifth quarterback in FBS history with 5,000 career passing yards and 4,000 career rushing yards.

Junior running back Cameron Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) rushed for 49 yards on 14 carries, eclipsing the 1,000-yard plateau for the season. Lynch and Stingily have become the first duo in school history to reach 1,000 yards in the same season. NIU fans can join the Huskies in Detroit by booking the bus package, hotel rooms and a ticket to the game at a one-stop website.

Book hotel rooms! A spot on the fan bus! Tickets to the NIU Alumni Association pregame reception … or game tickets only! Game tickets are $20 each and will be in the NIU section at Ford Field, while the NIU Alumni Association pregame reception is $35 and includes a dinner buffet and a drink ticket.

NIU students will find the link to the student bus package, available through Student Involvement and Leadership Development. The student bus trip includes transportation, a free game ticket and dinner on Friday for just $15. Only a limited number of seats available.

Huskie season ticket holders received vouchers good for a free ticket to either the 2013 MAC Championship game OR NIU’s bowl game this year (one voucher for each season ticket purchased).

To use those vouchers for MAC Championship game tickets, bring them to the NIU Convocation Center during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and exchange for tickets.
