The North Central College football team remains the No. 6-ranked team in the nation in the second regular-season NCAA Division III Top 25 poll released Sunday by D3football.com.
The Cardinals, who have held the same position since D3football.com's preseason poll in July, received 475 points in this week's voting.
The defending national champion, the University of Mount Union (Ohio), received 602 points and 11 first-place votes to remain in the No. 1 spot in the voting, while the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) is just two points behind with 600 points and seven first-place votes.
Ranked third is Linfield College (Ore.) with 576 points and six first-place votes, while the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Tex.) is fourth with 570 points and one first-place vote and Wesley College (Del.) rounds out the top five with 512 points.
North Central is one of two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) teams ranked in the top 25, joining 14th-ranked Wheaton College.
North Central enjoyed a promising start to the 2013 campaign, breaking open a close game in the second half and setting a single-game school record for total offense in a 41-24 victory at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Cardinals compiled 674 total yards, breaking the previous North Central record of 669 set against Millikin University in 2011. They ran 90 plays and completed six touchdown drives which covered at least 73 yards each. North Central put the game away with three straight scores in the second half and matched its highest opening-game point total since a 44-27 win over Benedictine University in 2005.
Senior quarterback Spencer Stanek completed 26 of 35 passes for 330 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a team-high 106 yards and two scores on 15 carries. His passing yardage total is the second-highest of his career, eclipsed only by a 361-yard outing at Cornell College in 2010, while his rushing total was just six yards shy of his output from the entire 2012 season.
North Central plays its first home game of 2013 on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Kickoff at 1 p.m.
