The Chicago Red Stars, with marquee players Shannon Boxx, Lori Chalupny, and Leslie Osborne, will play the 2013 home season at Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle this season. The team also unveiled the schedule for the inaugural 2013 NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) season. They’ll kick off their season at home on Sunday, April 14, at 5 p.m against Seattle Reign FC, a team that features U.S. Women's National Team star Hope Solo. The schedule features 11 home and 11 away matches that will conclude on Aug. 18. All home dates this season will be available as full season ticket packages, which are on sale now, or as individual or group game ticket options, which will be on sale in the next two weeks. This season at Benedictine will feature VIP field-side and goal-line seating, as well as a beer-garden, and open pregame tailgating. With the additional seating options, the total seating capacity will be around 3,600 spectators. Each of the league’s eight clubs will play a total of 22 games during a 19-week span, with a high percentage of games being played on weekends and holidays. The Red Stars have two holiday events as they meet Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC in a Mother’s Day matchup on May 12th and the WNY Flash, featuring Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd, on July 4 in a game that will see the Red Stars play for the first time ever in a custom red jersey top. The top four teams from regular season play will qualify for the NWSL playoffs and compete in the semifinals Saturday, Aug. 24. The NWSL will crown its inaugural champion on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Open tryout set—The Red Stars will host an open tryout for prospective players on March 5 and 6 in Westmont. College seniors and post-college players are welcome to register. Players will be able to showcase their skills and potentially earn an invite to the Red Stars preseason training camp, and could possibly earn a roster spot for the inaugural NWSL Season. All players interested will need to fill out a registration form and a waiver. Registration cost is $60 and the event will take place on March 5 from 10 a.m. to noon 1:30-3 p.m. Registrants are expected at both sessions. An invite-only session will take place the following day, March 6, from 8-10 a.m. Tryouts are being held indoors at Westmont Yard Sports Complex, 233 W 63rd Street, Westmont. Participants must provide their own transportation and accommodations for the event.
Red Stars add three—The Chicago Red Stars have added three more free agents to their list of five for the upcoming NWSL season, including Lori Chalupny, Taryn Hemmings, and Ella Masar. This follows an announcement of midfielder Leslie Osborne. Per league and team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The Red Stars will be announcing their 5th free agent in the near future. Chalupny, a 29-year-old versatile midfielder from St. Louis and also captain of the 2008 gold-medal Olympic USWNT with 92 caps, returns to Chicago for her second season. She was an integral part of the 2012 Red Stars team that contended in the WPSL Elite final. In between seasons she spent time in Sweden with team AIK. Another member of that team 2012 Chicago team, and long-time Red Star, forward Ella Masar, will also remain in the Windy City this season. The Illinois-native was the Red Stars leading scorer on their 2010 WPS team and later went on to play a season with French side Paris Saint-Germain. Like Chalupny, the opportunity to play close to home played a role in her decision to remain with Chicago. “Getting to play at home makes this crazy whirlwind of the last couple years come into perspective,” said the 26-year-old Masar. “I have had some amazing experiences throughout my years of being a pro player, but nothing has ever been quite like home!” “To have an organization, staff, and coach that believes in me is something I never take for granted in playing with the Red Stars.” To add to the above-mentioned attacking players, defender Taryn Hemmings has been brought in to bolster an already strong Red Stars backline that features Canadians Erin McLeod and Carmelina Moscato. The 26-year-old Colorado-native most recently competed with the Boston Breakers in WPS and WPSL Elite. She also spent time with Australian side Canberra.
Red Stars add Osborne— Chicago Red Stars have added Leslie Osborne to their roster for the 2013 NWSL season. Per league and team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. “I believe this was the next step to take professionally and personally,” Osborne stated. “I will be back in the Midwest, with my family being an hour away. I am very excited to be a Red Star and a part of another class act franchise and organization.” Osborne is a native of Brookfield, Wis., and has a familiarity with Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames.
