EUREKA - The 2010 Shepherd’s clinics have been scheduled for Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, 2010. They will be held at the Woodford County Extension office beginning at 7 pm.

 

Topics for the Jan. 4 clinic include: Preventing and treating Hypothermia in new born lambs, Dr. Clifford Shipley, University of Illinois; Is there a Future for Producers selling Sheep Poo? Becky Weber and Charley Bedinger have started “Ewe Poo Compost”, a company that composts and sells composted sheep manure.  They will outline why, how and where they market their products as well as the hoops you will need to jump through to do the same; Update on the Illinois Scrapie Situation, Dr. Rick Jones will bring producers up to date on recent changes in the Illinois Scrapie program.

 

Topics for the Jan. 11 clinic will be: Sheep Fencing for Improved Animal Control & Reduced Predation, Dean Oswald, Area Extension Specialist, Kewanee; How we manageour 6,000 head ewe flock. Donna May, a well known Suffolk producer and her husband have a 6,000 commercial ewe flock in Howe, Idaho.  Donna will tell us about the year round management of those ewes and their lambs as well as the marketing of their lambs and wool.; Thoughts About  the Future of the Sheep Industry in the United States.

 Problems and opportunities. Then, as Richard Cobb will be retiring in May of 2010, he looks at how he sees the future of the U.S and Illinois sheep industries. To register for these  programs, call the Woodford County Extension office at 309-467-3789.
