EUREKA - The restoration of Stumbaugh Cemetery in Montgomery Township will be the topic of the October 8th meeting of the Woodford County Historical Society. Mary Eschelbach, who spearheaded the project, will explain the impetus for the project and the steps that were taken to make it happen. The meeting will be held in the Maple Lawn Memorial Hall, 700 N. Main Street, Eureka. The Hall is 2 blocks west of Main Street on Cottage Street. All WCHS meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. The hostess for the meeting is Karen Fyke.

Stumbaugh Cemetery was begun as a burying ground for people who lived on and around the Stumbaugh farm. The land was sold at some point, and the farmer who owned the land kept the place mowed. Over the years there were fewer and fewer burials, until the cemetery finally went dormant. Recently there was a family who wanted a burial there, and the search for permission to bury evolved into a full-out restoration project.
The process has been an eye-opener for Mary Eschelbach and the others who volunteered their time and resources to restore the cemetery, and she has received interest and inquiries from others who would like their cemeteries renewed.
The Woodford County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving our history in all its varied and colorful forms. Meeting the second Thursday of each month, March through December, at different places within the county, the group welcomes any and all. There is neither a pre-registration requirement nor any entry fee.
The November 12th meeting will be at Snyder Village Community Hall in Metamora and will feature Robin Robinson in a program titled “Fiber Arts and the Pioneer Woman.”
