Deon Maas traveled to Japan in October, 2008 on a trip sponsored by the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. Each year, the Japanese government enables 320 U.S. teachers to travel and study in Japan for three weeks to help foster understanding between the two countries through their teachers and students. While in Japan she and other teachers spent time in cities as well as villages gathering information (and fabric) about Japanese culture and people. Her presentation at Sew Special will include a brief travelogue with slides. Deon is an art teacher in the Avon school system with a lifelong interest in Japanese garments including kimono. She creates stunning fashions from her own supply of Japanese fabrics.
The American Sewing Guild is a membership organization which welcomes sewing enthusiasts of all skill levels and from many different walks of life. Chapters are located all across the country, and members meet monthly to learn new sewing skills, network with others who share an interest in sewing and participate in community service sewing projects, special events, and trips. Membership in the Guild gives an opportunity to share a love of sewing with others who share the same interests, enjoy sewing publications, and receive discounts from many retailers.
