EUREKA - “Aprons and Their Stories” will be the topic of the September 17th meeting of the Woodford County Sewing Guild. Members and guests are encouraged to bring favorite aprons and to tell the story behind each one. Everyone will also have the opportunity to trace off the pattern for “Aunt Mary’s Favorite Apron.” The meeting begins at 7 P.M. at the Farm Bureau Building, 117 W. Center, Eureka. The Farm Bureau Building is directly across the street from Pizza Hut. Parking is available in the parking lot that is entered from Callender Street. The meeting is free, and everyone who uses needles and thread is welcome.
So many of the aprons that we use have histories attached to them. It may be that the apron was a gift from a friend, or it belonged to a grandmother, or it is fashioned out of memorable material. Apron stories are interesting and we plan to celebrate our aprons’ histories at the September meeting.
“Aunt Mary’s Favorite Apron” was created during the time when women had “big hair” that they didn’t want to get mussed by pulling an apron over their heads. It’s a clever arrangement and easy to replicate once a seamstress has had a chance to look at it.
The Woodford County Sewing Guild meets on the third Thursday of the month, September through May, presenting programs of interest to all ages of people who like to sew, knit, tat or crochet. The goal of the organization is to provide a place and time for women to get together. Everyone is welcome to share in the joy and humor of creating with needle and thread. Each month’s meeting includes a show-and-tell in which each person is given an opportunity to show what she/he has been working on or to ask for suggestions to solve a puzzle. It’s a relaxed group of congenial people who share the same love of thread, needle, and fabric.
The October 15th meeting is “What To Do With Granny Squares,” and crocheting will be the main topic, but there’ll be plenty of sewing to talk about, too.
